On October 15th, 2015, Institute of Humanities of SPbPU began preparations for the University contest "The best humanities student of Polytechnic". The final stages of this contest will be held from 15th to 30th of March 2016. This contest is open for all SPbPU students.

The competition aims to encourage students who have the profound knowledge and versatile talents in the field of humanities and to highlight the importance of humanities for all University students

Liberal arts, such as history, philosophy, political economy, foreign languages, the Russian language, jurisprudence and others, have been taught at the Polytechnic University since its foundation. Education in the field of liberal arts contributes to a better understanding between people and develops our mindset.

The main goal of this contest is to prove that an educated man is capable of mastering the subjects in all fields.

The contest will take place in two stages:

  1. A qualifying round, March 15, 2016
  2. A creative round, March 30, 2016

The qualifying round tests the students' knowledge in the field of history, philosophy, political science, Russian and foreign languages.

The creative tour consists of four tasks:

  • a quiz of the most important dates, events and personalities that constitute the basis of humanities;
  • the translation of a poem from Russian into a foreign language;
  • a verbal duel on a given topic;
  • individual speeches.

Criteria for assessing the creative round of the competition:

  • demonstration of knowledge in the field of humanities;
  • knowledge of a foreign language;
  • good reasoning skills, the ability to communicate in Russian, the ability to convince the interlocutor and to convey the viewpoint;
  • the ability to show tolerance; 
  • good rhetoric skills.

The winners are chosen by the competitive commission and are based on the total scoring of contenders in the second round.

To participate in the competition, the student must apply to the group https://vk.com/gi_spbstu_konkurs from October 15, 2015, to February 29, 2016, submitting an essay on "The History of a portrait" (more information in the group vKontakte.ru).

The main prizes:

  • 1st place - 30,000 rubles
  • 2nd place - 20,000 rubles
  • 3rd place - 10,000 rubles

An additional prize for best essay sent upon registration will also be awarded. Runner-up prizes to all winners of the first round will be awarded and the certificates to all the participants of the first round will be given.
