Polytechnic University is125! Diplomas and mantles of Honorary Doctors were presented at the university

Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University celebrates its 125th anniversary. On February 19, a solemn ceremony of awarding diplomas and mantles of Honorary Doctors of SPbPU took place in the meeting hall of the Academic Council of SPbPU.

125 years ago, on February 19, 1899, Emperor Nicholas II signed a decree on the founding of the Polytechnic Institute in St. Petersburg. Polytechnics will celebrate this date all year long. On February 17, a celebration for graduates and a rector’s ball have already taken place.

Today is a very special day. Those gathered here are honored to receive the badge and mantle of Honorary Doctors of our university. These are five outstanding, unique scientists, organizers, and, most importantly, friends of Polytechnic University. They have long-standing contacts, warm relations and productive cooperation with our university. This is a milestone event for all of us, emphasized Andrei Rudskoi.

Among those honored with the title of Honorary Doctor is a statesman of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Honorary Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, Rector of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University Zhanseit Tuimebayev. He has made a great contribution to the development of educational and scientific cooperation between SPbPU and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.

It is a great honor for me to become an Honorary Doctor of SPbPU. I would like to congratulate all of you on a double holiday — today is the anniversary of the university and Andrei Ivanovich’s birthday. We are proud that such a wonderful person, scientist Andrei Rudskoi heads the famous Polytechnic University. We have close ties, we will continue to serve our friendship and cooperation, said Zhanseit Tuimebayev.

Sadritdin Turabdjanov, full member of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, holder of the Order of Friendship of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Rector of the Islam Karimov Tashkent State Technical University, became an honorary doctor of the Polytechnic University. He contributed to the development of joint educational and scientific activities of SPbPU and TSTU in the field of hydropower, alternative energy sources, physical electronics.

I express my great gratitude to the members of the Academic Council for supporting my candidacy and personally to Andrei Ivanovich for believing in me. I will serve Tashkent State Technical University and St. Petersburg Peter the Great Polytechnic University, said Sadritdin Turabdjanov.

The title «Honorary Doctor of SPbPU» was awarded to Zhou Zhuguang, Honorary Member of the Council of the Chinese Mathematical Society, member of the Steering Committee for Mathematics Teaching of the Chinese Ministry of Education, President of Jiangsu Pedagogical University. Under his leadership, the Joint Sino-Russian Engineering Institute of SPbPU and CPU was established in the People’s Republic of China in December 2015, which is of strategic importance for the development of Sino-Russian cooperation in the field of education.

I am honored and proud to be awarded the title of Honorary Doctor. This is not only a recognition of my merits, but also a proof of the deep friendship between our universities. I will do my best to contribute to the strengthening of cooperation, Zhou Zhuguang said.

Andrei Rudskoi presented the SPbPU insignia «For Merit» for significant contribution to the development of Polytechnic University to:

1. Mikhail Lustenkov, honorary education worker of the Russian Federation, excellent educator of the Republic of Belarus, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Rector of the Belarusian-Russian University;
2. Edward Sandoyan, statesman of the Republic of Armenia, academician and full member of the Presidium of the Academy of Pedagogical and Psychological Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, Rector of the Russian-Armenian University;
3. Prof. Wang Qingsheng, Director of the Zhejiang Sino-Russian Research Institute, Director of the Zhejiang Sino-Russian Research Institute of New Materials Technologies for Power Engineering
4. Honorary Head of the Representative Office of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University in Shanghai, Director General of the PUE Business Incubator Su Jing.

In addition, the jubilee medal of the 350th anniversary of Peter the Great was presented to the Acting Rector of the B. N. Yeltsin Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University, a specialist in the field of socio-political history of the 20th century and international relations, candidate of historical sciences Denis Fomin-Nilov.

After the awards, the Polyhymnia choir performed Gaudeamus, and the participants of the meeting took a joint photo on the White Staircase of the Main Building. This day is filled with milestone events: today, in honor of SPbPU’s 125th anniversary, the noon shot was fired from the cannon of the Naryshkin Bastion of the Peter and Paul Fortress. Rector of SPbPU Andrei Rudskoi fired the celebratory shot.
