22 November 2023 University life 209

Every semester international students of Polytechnic University traditionally participate in excursions around St. Petersburg. The season of this academic year started with the event «Non-Banal St. Petersburg» and continued with the thematic sightseeing program «October 1917».

Thematic review program “October 1917”

SPbPU students drove along the Western High-Speed Diameter, admired the Gazprom Arena stadium, the Lakhta Center skyscraper, and visited several iconic places. They finished the program in the modern creative space Sevkabel Port.

The guide told interesting historical information. I have admired Russian literature since childhood and was very happy to see Pushkin’s sculpture. I took a lot of photos and have already shared my impressions with my friends from Turkey, said Aykurt Alperen, a 1st year student from Turkey.

Students at the Smolny Cathedral

The tour guide told us in detail about the history, types of buildings, historical connections of St. Petersburg with Sweden and Finland, squares and parks. It is very important for us that in Polytechnic University we not only get knowledge in our chosen specialty, but also get acquainted with the great history and architecture of St. Petersburg, said Hamad Karwan Khald Hamad, a 2nd year student from Iraq.

The cruiser “Aurora” was particularly impressive

During the excursion «October 1917» the foreign students learned how the October Revolution changed the usual life of the Northern Capital and its appearance. They were told how the city survived this difficult period and what in present-day St. Petersburg reminds of those events.

The excursion left unforgettable impressions in my heart. We got acquainted with the rich history of Russia and St. Petersburg, admired the unique architecture and bought souvenirs. These memories will remain for a lifetime and will remind us of the wonderful time spent in Russia, shared Nguyen Van Tu Anh, 1st year PhD student of IMM&T.

Our first stop was at the Smolny Cathedral, then we visited the memorial complex. We were especially impressed by the cruiser «Aurora», which is now a museum. During the sightseeing bus excursion, we saw Hare Island, many sights on Nevsky Avenue: the Kazan Cathedral, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, the Church of St. Catherine. This excursion introduced us to the rich history of this amazing city, said Muli David, a student from Kenya.
