January 25 saw opening of the International Nuclear Engineering Winter School in Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. The Institute of Energy and Transport Systems (Department “Nuclear and Heat Power Engineering”) and the Department of International Educational Programs were the organizers of the Winter School. The Winter School was held from January 25 till February 6 in 2016.

38 international students from Italy, Finland, South Korea, the Czech Republic and other countries came to study at the Winter School, as well as 6 professors from Bangladesh, who came here for advanced training.

10 visiting professors, who were invited to give lecture, came from the leading universities of the world: Czech Technical University in Prague (the Czech Republic), Lappeenranta University of Technology (Finland), Polytechnic University of Turin (Italy), Polytechnic University of Milan (Italy), Chung-Ang University (South Korea). Some professors from the Institute of Power Engineering and Transport Systems, SPbPU (Department “Reactor and boiler facilities”) will also give lectures.

It is important to remark that the Nuclear Engineering Winter School is organized with the support of the state corporation “Rosatom”. The following representatives of Rosatom attended the opening event: Y.N. Seleznyov, President of the Central Institute of Advanced Training, Rosatom, A.D. Ponomarenko, Director of the International Programs Project Office, “Rosatom Corporative Academy”, Professor V.V. Artisyuk, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation of the Central Institute of Advanced Training, Rosatom.

The opening ceremony of the Winter School was begun by D.G. Arsenyev, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation, who addressed the audience with a greeting speech. He pointed out that nuclear power engineering is a perspective development trend for many countries all over the world. Education in this field is very popular among foreign students. According to D.G. Arsenyev, the Nuclear Engineering Winter School is one of the top priority international educational projects of the Polytechnic University.

“I want to express my gratitude to the visiting professors from the partner universities and to the students from many countries of the world who took part in the Nuclear Engineering Winter School. I am sure that all the participants will gain valuable knowledge and experience, useful in their future career. You will learn about new trends in power engineering, achievements of the foreign colleagues, you will meet with the representatives of the leading companies, among which, I would like to particularly not the largest corporation “Rosatom”. I wish you may make new friends and meet like-minded people on your way to professional discoveries”, - said D.G. Arsenyev, Vice-Rector for International Cooperation.

The speech of the Vice-Rector for International Cooperation, SPbPU was supported by N.A. Zabelin, Director of the Institute of Power Engineering and Transport Systems. He greeted the audience of the Winter School and recommended that they should listen to the lectures attentively, ask questions and share knowledge with each other.

“Over the last several years a lot of opportunities have appeared in the field of training specialists in power engineering. Our university is engaged in development of educational programs in this major jointly with the help of international companions. I am sure that our cooperation will have a positive impact on development of power engineering,” said N.A. Zabelin, Director of the Institute of Power Engineering and Transport Systems.

V.V. Sergeev, Head of department “Nuclear and Heat Engineering” told the audience that they should expect intensive classes and interesting projects ahead. He introduces the tutors of the Winter School – A.S. Aleshina and E.A. Sokolova and advised to address them with regard to any relevant issues.

“The Nuclear Engineering Winter School in SPbPU is a great opportunity for each of you, which includes meeting with highly-qualified professionals and experts. During the work of the Winter School a guided tour to Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant will be organized,” reported V.V. Sergeev.

The organizers of the event pointed out that the main objective of the classes is make all the participants acquainted with up-to-date trends in the energy sector, help them to make a choice about their further research and establish the necessary contacts.

In my opinion, representatives of the energy sector and higher educational institutions should do their best to create a stable partner alliance, and be in constant dialogue about common projects. I hope that my experience in international cooperation, experience of teaching at Tokyo Institute of Technology, communications with top-managers of the major companies will help all the students of the Winter School,” said V.V.
