The results of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, an international academic rating of the influence of universities in the Internet space, have been published. About 31,000 universities around the world, including more than 1,000 Russian universities, were evaluated. Only 13 Russian universities were included in the top 1000 of the rating, and St. Petersburg Polytechnical University of Peter the Great takes 7th place and 661st place in the world among them.

SPbPU ranks 7th among Russian universities and 661st in the world in the international academic ranking Webometrics

SPbPU showed the best result in the Excellence indicator, which reflects the number of our scientists’ articles among the top 10% most cited in the international Scopus database. Here our university ranked 5th in Russia and 577th in the world. It is pleasant to note that, as in many other rankings, in Webometrics we continue to confirm the high quality of our scientific activity. The up-to-date and high-quality articles of our scientists have confirmed our commitment to the mission of generating and disseminating advanced knowledge, commented the Rector of SPbPU Andrei RUDSKOI.

“Openness,” assessed by the number of citations of the university’s authors, is also our strength, leading to the 7th position in Russia in this indicator. According to Maria Vrublevskaya, Head of the Strategic Planning Department at SPbPU, the strengthening of Polytechnic University’s position in the Webometrics ranking confirms the correctness of the strategic vector of the university’s open data and informatization policy. In addition to the active work of our colleagues with the website content, it is important to note that both last year and this year - the Year of Science and Technology - we carried out a number of landmark collaborative campaigns to popularize the scientific achievements of our scientists on various world-class platforms, notes Maria Vrublevskaya.

For reference:

The Webometrics Ranking (or Ranking Web) is a project of the Cybermetrics Lab, part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). (analog of the Russian Academy of Sciences). The main purpose of this ranking is to promote open access to the knowledge generated by a university. The ranking was first published in 2004 and since then it is published twice a year, at the end of January and the end of July.

The ranking methodology evaluates universities according to three indicators:

Visibility (weighted 50%) is the number of external links to the university's web pages. The sources of information are Majestic and Ahrefs. The indicator is the basis for the Impact rank.

Openness (10%) is the number of citations of the top 210 profiles (authors) of each university according to Google Scholar Profiles. Openness rank is compiled on the basis of the indicator.

Excellence (40%) is the number of university papers in the period 2015-2019 among the top-10% most cited in each of the 26 scientific fields. The data source is SCImago. The Excellence rank is compiled based on the indicator.
