International Networks and Alliances
Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU) is strengthening its position on the global stage through active and strategic membership in key international university associations. Membership in international associations provides access to global academic networks, collaborative research, and unique educational opportunities for students and scholars. Students benefit from double degree programs, semester exchanges, and internships at leading global universities, as well as participation in international scientific and educational conferences, projects, and symposia.
For the university, membership in international associations means strengthening its scientific prestige, educational ties, and developing the university’s international reputation and presence on the international arena, as well as attracting talented students and faculty from all over the world.
In general, active work in international associations is an integral part of SPbPU’s strategy aimed at integrating into the global scientific and educational space and training sought-after global specialists.
Association of Sino-Russian Technical Universities (ASRTU)was established in 2011 to promote Chinese-Russian higher education and strengthen innovative potential. Currently, 68 technical universities from Russia and China are members of the association, with the goal of uniting the efforts of leading universities in training highly qualified specialists for innovative industries.
Founders of the Association: Bauman Moscow State Technical University and Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT).
In 2023, the ASRTU Academic Union of Green Development was established. Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University became a co-founder. A total of 10 Russian and 10 Chinese universities acted as co-founders.
ASRTU Green Union is a non-profit, non-legal organization voluntarily created by universities that are members of the Association of Technical Universities of Russia and China.
The association was established in May 2015 in Xi’an, China, with the active participation of SPbPU. Its membership includes more than 145 universities from various countries and regions located along the Silk Road. The UASR Executive Committee includes 18 leading universities.
Mission:
Establishing a platform for cooperation in higher education, promoting regional openness, and enhancing cooperation between universities from countries and regions along the Silk Road.
Main objectives of the alliance:
- Facilitate the development of student exchange programs between universities.
- Organize cultural exchanges and events aimed at strengthening friendship between the peoples of the Alliance countries.
- Combine efforts and establish international ties between universities in the fields of science, political and economic research, personnel training, and more.
- Improve the quality of education in Alliance countries.
- Promote economic growth in the countries of the New Silk Road Economic Belt in the Eurasian region.
The association was established on the initiative of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China on the basis of Shanghai Jiaotong University.
Main areas of activity:
- annual internships and participation in research projects for young scientists from association member countries at foreign universities, research organizations, and companies;
- annual professional development for university staff from association member countries in preparing joint grant applications, scientific and technological management and policy, innovative entrepreneurship, etc.;
- holding annual scientific and technological competitions;
- holding annual seminars in various scientific fields;
- establishing joint research laboratories;
- creating joint industrial parks;
- creating new joint technology transfer centers, etc.
The Universities Alliance of the New Silk Road (UANSR) is an international network of higher education institutions established to strengthen cooperation in education, science, and culture along the historic Silk Road. It plays a vital role in developing ties between countries along this ancient trade route and facilitating the exchange of knowledge and expertise between universities.
Founded: 2015
Initiator: Xi’an Jiaotong University, China.
Main Goal: To create a platform for international cooperation in education, science, and culture, building on the historical legacy of the Silk Road.
Membership:
- The Alliance unites more than 160 universities from over 40 countries located along the Silk Road and beyond.
- UANSR includes universities from China, Russia, Central Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and other regions.

The New Silk Road Universities Alliance is an important platform for international cooperation in education, science, and culture. The Global Virology Network (GVN) is an international coalition of leading virologists and research centers working together to detect, study, and combat viral diseases that pose a threat to human and animal health. The GVN plays a key role in pandemic preparedness and response and in advancing virology research worldwide.
Key Features and Objectives:

Founders: Professor Robert Gallo, co-discoverer of HIV, and other leading virologists.
Mission: Strengthening international preparedness and response to viral threats by pooling the knowledge, experience, and resources of the world’s leading virologists.

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), formerly known as One Belt, One Road (OBOR), is a massive global infrastructure development strategy initiated by China in 2013. It aims to connect Asia with Africa and Europe through a network of land and sea routes, stimulating economic growth and deepening cooperation among participating countries. BRI is one of the most ambitious and large-scale projects in history, with significant impact on the global economy and geopolitics.
Two main components:
- Silk Road Economic Belt: Land routes through Central Asia, Russia, and Europe.
- 21st Century Maritime Silk Road: Maritime routes connecting China with Southeast Asia, Africa, and Europe.

- Strengthening economic integration between participating countries.
- Stimulating economic growth and development.
- Infrastructure development (transport, energy, telecommunications).
- Promoting trade and investment.
- Deepening cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is an international nuclear fusion research and development project. Its goal is to demonstrate the technological feasibility of generating electricity on an industrial scale using nuclear fusion.
Key Features and Objectives:
Objective: To prove that fusion energy can be produced on an industrial scale.
Reactor Type: Tokamak — a device for magnetic plasma confinement.
Expected Result: ITER should produce 500 MW of thermal energy using 50 MW of input power, demonstrating a tenfold increase in energy (Q = 10).
Participants: 35 countries, representing more than half the world’s population.

The Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO) is an international organization of interested firms, associations, institutions and individuals that promotes sustainable energy development worldwide.
Founded in March 2016, GEIDCO comprises over 700 organizations from 96 countries (regions), covering areas such as energy, information, environmental protection, scientific research, consulting, and finance.
GEIDCO’s goal is to promote the creation of a global energy interconnection (GEI) system to meet the global demand for green, clean electricity. This is essential for the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Energy for All Initiative and climate change initiatives, as well as for ensuring sustainable human development.
GEIDCO’s areas of activity:
- disseminating the GEI concept;
- organizing the development of a GEI development plan;
- creating a scientific standardization system;
- conducting technical innovation and research;
- facilitating the implementation of engineering projects;
- providing consulting services.
The Yangtze Delta National Innovation Center is a strategically important project initiated by the Chinese government to transform the Yangtze River Delta region into a global hub of innovation and technological leadership. It focuses on developing advanced technologies, stimulating innovation across various industries, and creating a favorable ecosystem for entrepreneurship.
Established: 2021.
Location: Located in the Yangtze River Delta region (Yangtze Delta), which includes the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, and Shanghai Municipality. This region is one of the most economically developed and innovative in China.
Mission: To become a leading innovation hub globally by fostering the development of advanced technologies, stimulating industrial innovation, and creating a favorable ecosystem for entrepreneurship.
Strategic Goal: To transform the Yangtze River Delta region into an engine of China’s innovative development, facilitating its transition to a knowledge- and technology-based economy.
