Congratulations to the winners and runners-up of the BIG PhD competition
The winners and laureates of the Best International Grant for PhD (BIG PhD) 2024 competition have been summarized and announced. A unique competition for foreign PhD students of SPbPU is held for the third year in a row with the support of the Priority 2030 Strategic Academic Leadership Program.
The contest evaluated the publication activity of SPbPU foreign PhD students. Articles in highly ranked SCOPUS, Web of Science journals, as well as in journals included in the HAC list and the core of RSCI were taken into account. Also the active participation of a graduate student in conferences, presentations and publications of theses could bring points. An important criterion is the participation of international co-authors in each article, which reflects the presence of professional ties of the graduate student with foreign universities and research centers. A mandatory requirement for scoring was the correctly indicated affiliation of the graduate student with SPbPU.
This year, the Expert Committee of the competition received 51 applications for consideration. The most applications were received from foreign graduate students of the Institute of Industrial Management, Economics and Trade, the Institute of Machinery, Materials and Transport, the Institute of Energy, and the Institute of Civil Engineering. Graduate students from China and Kazakhstan were the most active in the competition.
When summarizing the results of the 2024 competition, the Expert Committee noted some significant results of publication activity and awarded Special Prizes for outstanding publication activity to two PhD students who unfortunately did not score enough points to be included in the winners and laureates. Ethiopian national Fincomess Sairoel Amertet (Institute of Machinery, Materials and Transport) and Chinese national Tsui Lun (Institute of Humanities).
Acting Vice-Rector for Advanced Projects Maria Vrublevskaya emphasized the importance of such competitions: For many years Polytechnic University has been confirming the status of a research university with a high level of internationalization. In our strategy we postulate an open, inclusive environment for the discovery of talents both in science and education, and attracting ‘young minds’ with high potential and motivation from different countries and stimulating their scientific activity through the BIG PhD competition not only provides a multifaceted and comprehensive approach, but also ensures close international scientific ties for the benefit of human development
.
Peter the Great Polytechnic University congratulates the winners and laureates of the competition, as well as the winners of Special Prizes and expresses the hope that this victory will motivate them to further active publication activity and contribute to the success of their scientific career.
