What Do You Know about Circular Economy?
In cooperation with Nuffic Neso, and within the frameworks of DutchScienceTalk project and SPbPU Science@Polytech project on October 24, 2018 Professor Arnold Tukker from the University of Leiden (the Netherlands) delivered an open lecture. The open lecture for the students and research community of St.Petersburg was devoted to the following “Challenges of the transition to the circular economy”.
The lecture addressed the transition towards a more resource-efficient society that has a resilient resource supply and is a core goal of governments in Europe and worldwide. The European Commission recently adopted an ambitious new Circular Economy Package to boost competitiveness, create jobs and generate sustainable growth. Circular economy comprises an integral approach to a resource efficient future, necessitating cooperation of all stakeholders along the value chain. To achieve this, the further development of circular, service-oriented business is especially promising and will be the focus of the proposed research.
This links product and service design, supply chain management, manufacturing technologies, product and service use, product treatment at end-of-life, and business models and strategies such as portfolio management and branding. Simultaneously, economic, societal and environmental aspects must be taken into account. To understand and optimally exploit the potential of a Circular Economy, not only advances in the above-mentioned fields are needed, but also above all mutual understanding and interaction between the disciplines involved.
Science@Polytech Open Lecture Participants gathered together an innovation-driven community of over 100 students and researchers not only from Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, but also from 15 universities of St. Petersburg: St. Petersburg State University, the Bonch-Bruevich St. Petersburg State University of Telecommunications, St. Petersburg Mining University, St. Petersburg State University of Economics, Baltic State Technical University "Voenmech", St. Petersburg State University of Civil Aviation, St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering etc.
Within the frameworks of the visit of the Professor Arnold Tukker to SPbPU prior to the Open Lecture there was planned the meeting with the SPbPU International Office as well as with the representatives of the key institutes and departments. The meeting was attended by Yuri Nurulin, Professor of the Institute of Computer Science and Technology, Inga Skvortsova, Associate Professor of the Institute of Industrial Management, Economics and Trade and Mikhail Romanov, Professor of the Civil Engineering Institute. During the meeting the parties discussed collaboration within the area of circular economy in the complex interdisciplinary way.
The special part of the meeting was devoted to discussing cooperation in the field of joint PhD programs. Head of SPbPU International PhD Programmes, Professor Tatiana Khvatova discussed the opportunities to organize cooperation and support programs in this sphere.
According to the participants the visit of Professor Arnold Tukker became the new milestone in developing collaboration with the Netherlands and finding the new areas of mutual interest.
