Open Lectures for International Students of University Foundation Program
In April, 2016 international students of the university foundation program of the Institute of International Educational Programs (IIEP) were given open lectures on Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, within the framework of which they became acquainted with SPbPU's laboratories and the leading professors of our university.
It should be noted that in IIEP citizens of other countries not only study Russian but also study basic subjects like Math, Geography, History, Physics, Chemistry, and other subjects.
"All students have different level of knowledge because every country has its own educational standards and requirements," – told director of IIEP A.M. ALEXANKOV. All professors of the University Foundation Program note the desire of international students to improve their knowledge and also their high level of motivation, responsibility, and diligence.
Two events were organized for the international students of IIEP in the Institute of Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering and Transport. During the visit to the scientific and research laboratory under the leadership of professor of the chair "Material Science and Technology" N.G. Kolbasnikov they found out about doing unique research and features of the research team's daily life, in which SPbPU students also participate. The professor also told the visitors about work of a prominent chemist D.I. Mendeleev, who was an associate and a friend of the famous statesman S.Y.Witte.
The second part of the program provided a lecture, devoted to problems of oxidant-reduction reactions. Associate professor of the chair of basic training of IIEP L.V. Yumasheva said that in the Institute of International Educational Programs there is a modern and well-equipped scientific laboratory, in which students conduct chemical experiments. In such manner they learn to know the world of chemistry in practice.
Within the open lecture on Physics, students under the supervision of an assistant of the chair of basic training of IIEP A. Glushenko took a tour to the laboratory of the chair "Experimental Physics" of the Institute of Physics, Nanotechnology and Telecommunications. Professor of the Institute of Physics, Nanotechnology and Telecommunications A.V. Prikhod'ko explained to the guests the main laws of unique physical phenomena, showed innovative equipment and materials, and proved that Physics is a combination of a marvelous science, creative search, and human mind.
"Of course, at this stage the students are not quietly ready for independent and confident work in a laboratory but, in my opinion, this tour can become an incentive to thoughtful and serious training, aimed at entering the university. I want to thank Aleksandr Vladimirovich for the great practical class and interesting talk with the students," – summed up the meeting at the laboratory A. GLUSHENKO.
After the end of the event, the international students of IIEP hurried to share with each other unforgettable impressions. "I really liked the lecture on Physics. The invention of the famous engineer Nicola Tesla made a great impression on me. At my school in Macedonia I had been told about it but at the lecture in the Polytechnic University I could see the experiment myself," – told a student of IIEP Dragana Yordanovska.
The open lecture on Mathematics was conducted by the head of the chair of basic training for international students V.V. Krasnoschekov. The lecture took place at the chair "Higher Mathematics" of the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, which preserved its original historical interior. After the lecture, the students talked to the head of the chair, professor V.I. Antonov. He wished them successful studying at SPbPU and great achievements in life.
