A.I. Rudskoy, Rector of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, made a speech at the opening ceremony. “At present it is absolutely clear that these are not the markets that create and develop technologies, the way they used to several decades ago, but these are technologies that create and develop markets”, emphasized A.I. Rudskoy in his welcome speech. “Multidisciplinary, cross- and pan-industry technologies that serve as a basis for the economy of the future allow us to improve the quality of the existing products or to create a new generation of globally competitive products. The Polytechnic University is closely cooperating with dozens of the leading Chinese universities and companies in order to develop these technologies”. Stefania Gianini, Minister of Education, University and Research of Italy, Long Yongtu, former Head of Negotiations and Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, and Yuan Yue, President of Dataway and the founder of Feimalv, made speeches at the opening ceremony.

More than 900 hi-technology companies and enterprises from 20 countries are taking part in the events of the Fourth China (Shanghai) International Technology Fair. The Fair was organized with the support of the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, as well as Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the State Intellectual Property Office of the People's Republic of China. The Polytechnic University presented its developments together with Shanghai Science and Technology Committee, the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, Chinese and other foreign enterprises working in the sphere of new generation information technologies, the Internet of things, robotics and industrial innovations.

Among the state-of-the-art industrial technologies offered by our university is the suspension for transfer gearbox of an automobile based on bionic design. It is highly efficient in terms of its weight, structural behavior, functional properties and production technology. This unique technology is based on a range of methods of technological optimization and the principles of bionic design, which enabled creating a high performance product according to numerous criteria.

In addition, products created at Science and Technology Company “Machine Building Technologies” were also presented at the fair, for instance, a thigh joint endoprosthesis made of titanium alloy powder with the help of additive technologies. “It took us six months to produce the endoprosthesis”, explained A.A. Popovich, Director of the Institute of Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering and Transport. “The joint of a real patient was scanned with the help of digital technologies, after that models were made of polystyrol, on the basis of which the metal endoprosthesis itself was made. Its geometry is exceptionally complex; it is made of bioinert material, which makes it safe for human body”.

The Institute of Energy and Transport Systems, SPbPU presented energy-efficient turboexpanders at the Fair. “Such turboexpanders can be installed at compressor plants and gas turbine engine fuel systems. Choked-flow turbines designed at the Polytechnic University served as a basis for turboexpanders”, explained N.A. Zabelin, Director of the Institute of Energy and Transport Systems, SPbPU. Other subdivisions of the University demonstrated their achievements in the sphere of information technologies: a technology for controlling a remote robotic system (the Institute of Computer Science and Technology, SPbPU), ultrasound equipment for monitoring the physical condition of pilots (the Institute of Physics, Nanotechnology and Telecommunications, SPbPU), etc.

Besides scientific developments, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University presented its educational programs as the leading higher education establishment in Russia (21 master’s degree and 4 bachelor’s degree programs in English and more than 500 master’s and bachelor’s degree programs in Russian), summer and winter schools in various fields of knowledge, short-term exchange programs and joint degree programs.

On the very first day of the Fair the delegation of the Chinese government headed by Wan Gang, the Minister of Science and Technology, and Yang Xiong, the Mayor of Sahnghai, highly appreciated the innovative and educational practices presented by the Polytechnic University.

Various events are scheduled to take place during the Fair and the delegation of the Polytechnic University headed by Rector A.I. Rudskoy is to participate in many of them. However, the main event of the day was the opening ceremony of the Representative Office of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University in Shanghai.
