3D Hackathon at SPbPU

23 November 2015 Science and Innovation 1107

Nowadays, IT technologies are developing rapidly, and so do the forms of specialist training in this field. The 3D Hackaton competition is one of the innovative events. It was held at the SPbPU Higher School of Engineering (http://hse.spbstu.ru/) on November 17 with the assistance of the International Academic Center Autodesk-Polytechnic and the Autodesk company.

'Hackathon' is a derivative from the words 'hack' and 'marathon'. In fact, hackathons have nothing to do with hacking information systems - they are basically marathons in programming, where experts in various fields of software development (programmers, designers, managers) collaborate to solve a certain task.

"Today, the competence of the developers' team, data exchange infrastructure, and predictive modeling tools are the key factors of successful design. Being a technology of design, the Hackathon offers students a unique opportunity to collaborate on their own project and go all the way from a concept to a working prototype under the guidance of SPbPU professors," V. S. Zaborovsky, Head of the Institute of Computer Sciences and Technologies, noted.

One of the main goals of 3D Hackhathon is to engage SPbPU students in professional activity in the field of IT and give novice developers the opportunity to communicate with industry experts while solving complex tasks. This events also promotes new technologies and methods for knowledge transfer, which are currently widely applied by world IT leaders such as Autodesk.

Around 100 students from the Institute of Computer Sciences and Technologies, the Institute of Civil Engineering, and FabLab Polytech took part in the first round of competition. Experts from Autodesk and SPbPU administration welcomed the participants: apart from V. S. Zaborovsky, speeches were given by E. I. Tuchkevich, Director of the International Academic Center Autodesk-Polytechnic, and N. I. Vatin, Director of the SPbPU Institute of Civil Engineering (ICE).

The competition was preceded by an introductory part where representatives of Autodesk talked about the most advanced developments. A. S. Andreyev presented a groundbreaking CAD/CAM tool for industrial and mechanical design - Autodesk Fusion 360. Yaroslav Reshetnikov and Vladimir Ananyev thoroughly described a new web service, View & Data API, which makes it possible to view and interact with large, complex 3D models using any Internet browser on almost any mobile device.

E. I. Tuchkevich signaled the start of the competition. Several ICE and ICST students teamed up with the representatives of FabLab Polytech and came up with a plan for cooperation. Leading professors and tutors will provide assistance for the students: V. M. Tushkevich, Head of the Department of Advanced Technologies; R. M. Lunev, Leading Professor at the Higher School of Engineering; and Yu. S. Zolotova, Leading Professor at the ICE SPbPU.

On November 24, 3D Hackathon will enter the intermediate stage, where tutors and technical experts will answer questions online. The students will present the results of their work on December 3. The winners will be awarded with gadgets and mobile devices from the partner of the event.

We wish best of luck to our students! Follow the news!
