More FabLabs!
According to the founder of the FabLab-movement Neil Gershenfeld "FabLab is a workshop where it is possible to make almost anything". In the state-of-the-art equipped FabLab room, anyone will find classes to their liking: a pupil who is interested in robotics, a young scientist who needs to create a prototype for a business project, and even a grandfather who sets his sights on making a figured table. A lot of regions of our country are interested in creating workshops known in English as "FabLab". Therefore, the representatives of the Center for Scientific and Technical Creativity of the Youth (SCY) of the Polytechnic University where FabLab Polytech exists shared the experience with their colleagues from Monchegorsk and Norilsk to open and develop similar workshops.
St.Petersburg Polytechnic University in cooperation with MMC Norilsk Nickel is implementing this project. In the region where the corporation is located, the competition to create FabLabs was held. The teams from Norilsk and Monchegorsk won the competition. According to the agreement between St.Petersburg Polytechnic University and MMC Norilsk Nickel, the representatives of SCY provided a number of training courses, two of which took place in St. Petersburg and two were held in Norilsk and in Monchegorsk respectively.
The Director of SCY I.E. Asonov, the technician of SCY D. Dzenushko and thе engineer of SCY D. S. Yershov helped our colleagues to achieve purposes of new Fablabs, especially in the development of personnel potential and technical creativity in the region and the involvement of talented youth. "The strategic objective of our University is to occupy position in the QS World University Rankings. It is impossible without the development of a strong network of contacts with the industrial enterprises and innovative infrastructure. The team of SCY tends to become the leader in sharing experience, in involving new partners into Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University and implementing innovative formats to collaborate", said the Director of SCY I.E. Asonov.
Within the framework of the intensive project-oriented training courses on digital production technologies and equipment laboratory management the technicians of SCY trained the technicians of "FabLab Norilsk" and "FabLab Monchegorsk" to work with the equipment. They introduced them with manufacturing techniques of simple and difficult flat objects, working with model (corrugated fibreboard) and functional (plywood, acryle, vinyl) materials. Attendees were also trained in technologies of the transformation of flat geometry into volumetric one and in technologies how to create three-dimensional models by means of a camera and some special software.
The managers of SCY provided a series of training courses for the Heads of FabLabs in Norilsk and Monchegorsk. They described in detail the approach to the project materialization that is how to implement idea for several days, and shared their experience in holdings special events in FabLab Polytech.
