Polytechnic University and the My Business Center transferred to Mariinsky Hospital individual protective gear against infection

During the coronavirus pandemic, the NTI SPbPU Competence Center, Fablab Polytech and the My Business Center for Youth Innovative Technologies (CYIT) joined together in helping St. Petersburg physicians. Polytechnic students, using 3D printers and laser cutters manufactured 420 protective screens and 80 reusable masks for doctors and medical staff dealing with patients with COVID-19. Representatives of the 3D Education Laboratory of the SPbPU NTI Center, Fablab Polytech and CYIT handed over the first batch of individual protective gear to the Mariinsky Hospital.

“Right now, doctors are saving lives sparing no pains. Seeing what is happening in the hospitals, we decided to actively engage in work and help with the supply of personal protective equipment, for the production of which we have all the necessary tools,” commented Roman BONDARENKO, Head of the 3D Education Laboratory at the NTI SPbPU.

Director of Fablab Polytech Polina DYATLOVA noted: “Presently, such as ours centers throughout Russia can prove that not only they are an educational environment but also strategic objects that can quickly adapt to any challenges. The current crisis situation has shown that our inventors are flexible and able to quickly create what is important at a particular point in time.”

And students of St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, residents of Fablab Polytech said they were happy to use the knowledge gained at the university to help people. Anna CHUMAKOVA: “We are doing an important and useful work. Thanks to 3D printing courses at the Fablab Polytech, where we had excellent training and could quickly and easily apply our skills in this situation.” Alexander KONOVALOV: “When I was studying 3D printing, I had no idea that my skills would be useful in such a complex situation. Glad I can help! ”

The initiative found a response at the Fund for Supporting Innovations and Youth Initiatives of St. Petersburg, with the help of which students are going to produce and handover to the hospitals of the city another 5,000 protective screens.
