International Summer School has opened a special area for young scientists

This year, the International Polytechnic Summer School for Young Scientists (IPSS) took place in St. Petersburg for the first time. It includes educational modules lasting 1-2 weeks, the target audience of which consists of graduate and postgraduate students. In contrast to the regular programs of the International Polytechnic Summer School, targeted at a broad audience of students in a particular subject area, International Polytechnic Summer School’s programs are science-oriented.

“Analysis of trends in the development of the international market of educational services, as well as regular monitoring of students’ needs showed that among the participants of the summer school there are students who would like to both deepen their knowledge in a particular subject and conduct applied research in the laboratories of the university under the guidance of our leading scientists. The creation of the International Summer School for Young Scientists was the answer to this challenge,” said Olga YEMELYANOVA, Head of the International Summer and Winter Schools of St. Petersburg, Head of the International Educational Programs and Academic Mobility Department of St. Petersburg.

The first-ever International Summer School for Young Scientists opened at SPbPU

The program of the first IPSS includes courses in “Polyphotonics” run by the Higher School of Applied Physics and Space Technology of IPN&T and the ECMI (IPM&M) Virtual Modeling Week (VMW).

On a par with the ECMI Virtual ECMI Simulation Week, about which we spoke about in our previous article, the “Polyphotonics” program, which aims at acquiring skills in the design and development of modern optical devices, aroused great interest among foreign audiences. A total of 14 young scientists from the U.S., Ecuador, Iran, India, Algeria and Armenia took part in it. Each student chose the most interesting area of photonics and started to carry out projects in such areas as optical telecommunications systems, application of optics in biomedical research, optical signal processing, and simulation of optical systems.

“Every day various tracks of the school on modern promising areas of photonics and optical measurements replace each other; the students actively participate in seminars and enthusiastically work on individual projects. The summer school will end with a round table discussion of the results,” commented Elena VELICHKO, Program Manager, Director of the Higher School of Applied Physics and Space Technologies.
