St. Petersburg scientists have developed a “smart nose”

A sensor created by scientists from Polytechnic University and the Zh.I. Alfyorov Academic University is able to recognize the smell of gas in a room much faster than the human sense of smell.
The device works on the basis of a microelectromechanical platform on which sensitive materials can be applied. The system has already learned to detect carbon monoxide, methane, alcohol vapors and other reducing and oxidizing gases. In the future, the sensor will be able not only to sense gas, but also to determine the freshness of food and even diagnose diseases by breathing.

According to experts, this approach increases the sensitivity of the sensor and reduces power consumption, and the used nickel oxide modified with metal nanoparticles, significantly extends the life of the sensor.
